Hegel’s temporal movement spans both logical structure and historical unfolding

Evidence

This movement is differentiated, and in two ways. Logically: it gathers together the different significations of the Hegelian understanding of time: a whole and a relation of moments (past, present, future), a synthetic structure (self-determination), a sensuous translation of the concept. Chronologically: it has itself a history, which is unfolded in history without being reducible to it. The substance-subject ‘sees itself coming’ (se voit venir) through two moments of its own identity, the Greek and the modern. These two major moments each possess their own conception of the relation between the extases of time, one having a conception of it as synthesis or self-determination; the other of it as hypotyposis. — Catherine Malabou, The Future of Hegel, 278

Categorization

  • DEFINE: Maps the double differentiation (logical/chronological) of the voir venir movement.
  • XREF: connects to: Hegel remains a thinker of the future against current philosophical suspicion; Hegel’s System is immanently temporalized through its own double perspective — Catherine Malabou, The Future of Hegel: Plasticity,…, 272; Hegel’s Man-God-Philosopher triad are temporal perspectives, not fixed substances — Catherine Malabou, The Future of Hegel: Plasticity,…, 287 (+5 more)
