Gramsci’s prison writings allude opaquely to politics because censorship barred direct speech
Evidence
We felt that it was indispensable to give priority to the central political experience of Gramsci’s life as a revolutionary—to the class struggle in Turin, to the formation of the Italian Communist Party, to the rise and consolidation of fascism, to the strategic debates which took place in the P.C.I. and in the Comintern in those years. It is this central political experience, of course, that Gramsci was least able to write openly about in prison, with the result that those passages of the Notebooks where he discusses fascism, or communist strategy, are necessarily opaque and allusive. — Antonio Gramsci, Selections from the Prison Notebooks, 242
