Executions for apostasy ceased long ago in the Muslim world

Evidence

At one time the law on apostasy was indeed enforced, and Muslims who were converted to some other religion were put to death, as were backsliders in parts of Christian Europe. This has not been done for a considerable time, and I doubt if anyone today would demand that Muslims who have embraced Christianity or Marxism should be killed for that offense. Should anyone, however, choose to raise this issue, the arguments would be the same as in the present case. — Bernard Lewis, From Babel to Dragomans, 1687
