Examining successful influencers reveals capital’s intrusion into their content
Evidence
This book is guided by a refusal to believe that “successful” influencers are essentially the same as those living and struggling and burning themselves out. As we mentioned above, in this book we mostly examine “successful” influencers in the construction of their online personas. Throughout, we look for the moments in which the presence of production, the presence of capital, intrudes. Our guiding principle is that the videos of influencers, their “content,” inevitably point toward the material foundations of contemporary capitalism, even if these foundations are rarely the focus. — Grant Bollmer, Katherine Guinness, The Influencer Factory, 32
