Even elite Indian colleges produced distinctly bilingual intelligentsias
Evidence
Even the most elite colleges β e.g., Presidency (Hindu) in Calcutta, Elphinstone in Bombay, Government College in Lahore β produced bilingual intelligentsias and scores of writers of Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, and so on. For those who came out of other kinds of colleges, which were by far the majority and were established most often by indigenous reform movements and philanthropies, moorings in English were even less secure. β Aijaz Ahmad, In Theory, 518
