Even academic analysis remains entrenched in Eurocentric map-based constructions of Africa

Evidence

It is no accident that among the first images the word “Africa” may evoke is a shape on a map, for the map is the metonymy of the Eurocentric construction of the world which became entrenched in the disciplinary projects of history and literary studies and continues to be entrenched in academic analysis to the present day. The word “Africa” can never entirely escape its bondage to the idea of Africa in the European imagination. — David Theo Goldberg, John Solomos, A Companion to Racial and Ethnic Studies, 3393
