Entfremdung is best rendered as making-strange, with juridical and Freudian resonance

Evidence

We suggest that Entfremdung should be translated as ‘making strange’, extranĂ©- isation in French, referring back to the legal term in France that designates the juridical status of the foreigner. Because of its ambiguity (it is a distinctively Freudian notion) and the archaic word to which it refers (Old French ‘estrangier’), we cannot retain the translation Ă©trangetĂ©, ‘strangeness’, suggested by Jean-Pierre Lefebvre. — Catherine Malabou, The Future of Hegel, 1374

Categorization

  • DEFINE: Proposes ‘making strange’ (extranĂ©isation) over ‘strangeness’ for Entfremdung on legal and Freudian grounds.
  • QUESTION: How does the Freudian freight of Entfremdung-as-uncanny-foreignness load onto Malabou’s plasticity project? Worth chasing.
  • XREF: connects to: Entfremdung is best translated as making strange, evoking the juridical foreigner; Entfremdung should be rendered as making-strange with legal-connotation resonance
