Educators as public intellectuals must model engaged democratic citizenship
Evidence
This is a role that public intellectuals can take up and in doing so give concrete expression to what it means to live in a democratic society. Such intellectuals bear the burden of confronting in their work every day the issue of what kind of citizen is required in a substantive democracy, and to take up the challenge in their work of putting into place the conditions that allow students, educators, and others to actively participate in shaping the ideological visions and material relations of power that make such a democracy possible. — David Theo Goldberg, John Solomos, A Companion to Racial and Ethnic Studies, 2698
