Early schooling should replace folkloristic worldviews with concepts of the State.

Evidence

The first, primary grade should not last longer than three or four years, and in addition to imparting the first “instrumental” notions of schooling—reading, writing, sums, geography, history— ought in particular to deal with an aspect of education that is now neglected—i.e. with “rights and duties”, with the first notions of the State and society as primordial elements of a new conception of the world which challenges the conceptions that are imparted by the various traditional social environments, i.e. those conceptions which can be termed folkloristic. The didactic problem is one of mitigating and rendering more fertile the dogmatic approach which must inevitably characterise these first years. — Antonio Gramsci, Selections from the Prison Notebooks, 339

Categorization

  • DEFINE: Introduces ‘folkloristic’ as Gramsci’s term for inherited, traditional social-environment worldviews the school must overcome.
  • XREF: This is the education-as-hegemony mechanism — connects forward to how later Islamophobia readings treat schooling’s role in reproducing or contesting common sense.
