Disputes over terminology for historical wrongs encode the same victim-perpetrator viewpoint gap.
Evidence
Even the basic terminology used to describe the transgression is often a subject of debate. To illustrate, in 2015, the Canadian Truth and Reconciliation Commission concluded that, because the residential schools prevented the “transmission of cultural values and identity from one generation to the next,” Canada perpetrated a cultural genocide against its First Nations (Brean 2015). However, critiques of the term “cultural genocide” expressed unease with what they perceived as excessive blame, arguing that “[r]esidential schools, after all, were schools, not death camps or killing fields” (Brean 2015). — Nurit Shnabel and Johannes Ullrich, Identity Needs in Intergroup Relations, 105
