Disney’s virtual worlds extend theme-park brand immersion to lower-income consumers
Evidence
For many of the world’s Disney fans, a trip to Disneyland or Disneyworld is not affordable or possible; the proto-metaverse Disney is building through its games and virtual experiences welcomes consumers of all income levels. Increasingly, it then pressures its users into upgrades through microtransactions. Disney has licensed or developed over six hundred video games. While these have had varying levels of success, it’s not hard to imagine these branded metaverses generating more profit for Disney than the theme park division one day soon. — Andrew deWaard, Derivative Media, 433

- ADDENDUM: Connects to the trees/infrastructure essay’s theme of engineered environments extracting value—Disney’s branded metaverse is a monetized landscape where the franchise rather than nature is the infrastructure. Also resonates with the sacrifice essay’s logic of deepening consumer commitment through gate structures (physical park barrier now replaced by microtransaction paywalls).
