Denial memoirs present Auschwitz as a lightly guarded camp with free inmates

Evidence

Christophersen then begins his personal account. He talks about Germany’s need for synthetic rubber. He had been wounded in the war and was sent to do a job in a rear area. He describes arriving at Auschwitz (“Auschwitz I,” the original ‘show camp” constructed in 1940) and finding many of the camp’s inmates walking around freely. The camp was guarded only at night, he says. He describes his supervisor and his roommate, fine fellows both. — Bob Altemeyer, The Authoritarian Specter, 3114
