Democratic transition triggered massive communist party elite turnover

Evidence

For their part, many of the old party leaders had little chance of staying on. The chaos and rapid changes of the transition meant that the old elites were discredited and largely helpless. Their power on the decline, many feared potential repercussions for their role in maintaining the authoritarian system. Many resisted change and were consequently forced out of the parties. As a result, as Table 2.2 shows, the transition to democracy was also a time for a bureaucratic exodus and massive elite turnover in the parties. β€” Anna M.
