Dakar revised the civilizing mission after admitting its old policies failed
Evidence
Dakar did not doubt in the 192o’s that it still had a mission to perform in West Africa. But in probing the causes of revolt it frankly admitted that many of its most cherished policies of the past had not yielded the expected dividends-and had actually hurt the interests of the Government General. As a result, an amended version of the civilizing mission would emerge, along with revolt and reaction, in France and West Africa between 1914 and 1930. — Alice L.
