Court-ordered FOIA releases reveal FBI surveillance of US South Asians

Evidence

Assia Boundaoui filed Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and won a court case compelling the FBI to release information on Operation Vulgar Betrayal. In her documentary, some South Asians in the midst of a largely Arab American community were the targets of the operation. Various Pakistani Islamist groups were added to the Foreign Terrorist Organization list in the 1990s. It is likely that South Asians were also being surveilled through programs like Operation Vulgar Betrayal. We will not know the full extent of state surveillance of Arabs, Muslims, and South Asians until more FOIA requests are filed. — Deepa Kumar, Islamophobia and the Politics of Empire, 1276
