Connecting concept dimensions with OR makes added intension increase extension.
Evidence
As we have seen in the context of the philosophy, logic, and Sartori tradition, increasing intension decreases extension because of the use of AND to structure concepts. One could use OR or + as the structural principle. In this case, quite obviously, to increase intension increases extension. This section illustrates this with the concept of the welfare state and gender critiques of it. Recall that the size of the welfare state is the sum of spending on all categories (i.e., secondary-level dimensions) considered to constitute the welfare state. The point of the gender critique is to extend the conceptualization of the welfare state to include special concerns of women. — Gary Goertz, Social Science Concepts and Measurement, 1437
Categorization
- DEFINE: Clarifies that the classic inverse intension/extension tradeoff is an artifact of AND-structuring, not a logical necessity.
- DEEPTHINKING: The intension/extension tradeoff is usually taught as inherent to concepts; here it is shown to be an artifact of the logical connective chosen, which reframes a whole tradition’s debate.
