Community field experiences shift teacher candidates’ lesson design toward place-conscious pedagogy
Evidence
Through individual check-ins, peer-to-peer support, and direct connections to course experiences, TCs were able to use the lesson plan assignment as a tool to develop their student-centered and place-conscious social studies teaching practice. Assessment of the lesson plan assignment demonstrated that TCs were able to connect Michigan’s PK-8 social studies standards to the sociocultural capital of a local community for purposeful learning opportunities. Many of the reflections from the lesson plan assignment referenced the impact of the community-engaged learning experiences in TCs’ understandings of community-based pedagogy in the social studies. Through the process of praxis, TCs engaged their emerging conscientização for meaningful and empowering learning opportunities in the social studies classroom. — James D.
