Community-engaged field experiences re-teach educators the assets of local neighborhoods

Evidence

Reflective dialogue with these two particular TCs indicated the impact of the community-engaged learning experiences to Black Bottom/Lafayette Park and the Brightmoor Makerspace. Both TCs conveyed they underwent a (re)learning of Detroit as the inherent assets of local neighborhoods were centered in the social studies methods course. By connecting the communityengaged learning experiences to their developing understandings of studentcentered and place-conscious pedagogy, both TCs model the awakening that is necessary for a socially aware and critically conscious teaching practice. — James D.
