Commentary frames selfies as vernacular and private in contrast to self-portraits
Evidence
Self-portraits are art, are institutionally legitimate, are public objects that possess a uniqueness in time and space that is autonomous from the artist and the audience. Selfies are private; they are vernacular, of the people and by the people, essentially linked to the photographer. The artwork, by its nature, resists interpretation and the gaze of the spectator. The selfie invites the gaze, welcomes voyeuristic spectacle. β Grant Bollmer, Katherine Guinness, The Influencer Factory, 81
