Classes share tastes without acting as coordinated groups

Evidence

Members of each class adhere to similar conventions and oppose rivals’ alternatives. That doesn’t mean, however, that classes work as coordinated advocacy groups. Max Weber warns, “A class itself is not a community.” Individual members of classes pursue the same goals for themselves, not necessarily for the group. Taste arises within a class because individuals with the same status assets agree on shared values that emphasize the importance of those assets. — W. David Marx, Status and Culture, 313
