Chronic noise exposure causes tinnitus and hyperacusis even with hearing protection
Evidence
Now I live with a background of tinnitus. In my case it is a high-pitched hissing sound, almost a whistle. It varies in level depending on factors I have not been able to identify, but it is always there. I also am more sensitive to loud sounds than when I was younger. It is called hyperacusis (www.hyperacusis.net). I know people for whom even reasonably loud sounds inflict pain. — Toole, Floyd E, Sound reproduction- the acoustics and…, 1882
