Chronic black suffering fails to trigger national moral alarm

Evidence

To see how racial habits hold sway we need look no further than our lack of national will to address the persistence of racial inequality. Americans have gotten used to double-digit unemployment in black communities. The staggering number of African Americans in prison or under some form of criminal supervision is not a cause for moral panic. The fact that hundreds of thousands of black children struggle every day to eat and attend failed schools doesn’t raise a national alarm. This state of affairs reveals what researchers call the racial empathy gap. — Eddie S. Glaude Jr., Democracy in Black, 165

Categorization

  • DEFINE: Introduces ‘racial empathy gap’, a precise research term the reader needs to distinguish from prejudice and from the value gap proper.
  • XREF: The ‘staggering number under criminal supervision not causing moral panic’ directly evidences the value gap premise (white lives matter more); connects to post-Ferguson criminal-justice data.
