British capitalism’s distinctive trajectory shaped how ordinary people contested collectively
Evidence
Sixth, the particular history of Great Britain set off British contention from struggles in other Western countries. British capitalism and the British state both followed distinctive trajectories over the years from the 1750s to the 1830s, and those paths of change strongly affected the ways that ordinary British people acted together on their interests. On the side of capitalism, British landlords and entrepreneurs invested early and heavily in large-scale marketing and relatively concentrated means of production. They thus promoted proletarianization of workers in both agriculture and manufacturing. Their reorganizations of production likewise stimulated rapid shifts from agriculture to manufacturing and services as well as from rural to urban population, which in its turn favored a substitution of relatively long distance, definitive migration for the swarming short-distance movement that had characterized the previous centuries. — Charles Tilly, Regimes and Repertoires, 360
