Bottom-up neuron-by-neuron auditory modelling is computationally and knowledge-wise infeasible.
Evidence
In principle, modelling could be performed by first modelling one neuron, followed by modelling the next neuron, until the entire auditory pathway was modelled. Unfortunately, this approach is doomed for two reasons: the current knowledge of the complex electrochemical functioning of the neurons and of the neuroanatomy of the pathway is far from the stage where all the details can be modelled. In addition, the enormous number of neurons devoted to hearing makes it computationally out of reach in the near future. — Ville Pulkki, Matti Karjalainen, Communication Acoustics- An…, 822
