Anti-Muslim racism is interwoven with settler colonialism, police violence, and the prison system

Evidence

Tarrant, the terrorist who crossed the Tasman Sea from Australia and carried out New Zealand’s deadliest modern terror attack, was just another “regular white man.” With evil efficiency, he did what the two nations’ forefathers had done to the Maoris, the Torres Strait Islanders, and the Aborigines in earlier eras. He indiscriminately murdered them, wiping them off a land that he believed was his own, not as a matter of fiat or legal status, but as a matter of blood, on account of his whiteness. … First Maoris, and then Muslims. White supremacy began with the killing of indigenous Brown people, en masse, on a land that was their own, and its later chapter closed with two massacres of Brown, Black, and white citizens and immigrants inside their places of worship. Their legal or generational claim to the land, for Tarrant and his burgeoning pack of white supremacist counterparts in Australia and across the world, did not matter—only their race, and more specifically, their nonwhiteness. — Khaled A.
