Allport predicted religious extremism is ancillary to a prejudiced worldview rather than its cause

Evidence

Allport (1966, p. 455) also expected “fundamentalists” would prove more prejudiced. He thought they were a version of his extrinsic orientation. “While most extrinsics are casual and peripheral churchgoers, a few are ideological extremists. With equal fervor they embrace some political nostrum along with the tenets of some religious (usually fundamentalist) sect. In such cases religious extremism is found to be ancillary to a prejudiced philosophy of life. — Bob Altemeyer, The Authoritarian Specter, 4203
