Airlines accommodating seatmate-bias complaints normalize Muslim threat fears and racialize travelers
Evidence
Although the flight attendant told the passenger it was not the airline’s policy to allow customers to choose their seatmates, the attendant accommodated his request by allowing him to sit in the back of the plane. The compliance of the airline to the request of the passenger is telling. By accommodating racist attitudes toward Muslims, the message is that Muslims are not worthy of protection from humiliation and racism because the state has confirmed they are dangerous through its security policies. Passengers are able to report their fellow passengers as suspicious to flight attendants just for being Muslim and consequently have them removed them from flights. This practice normalizes fears of Muslims and thus racializes them as a threats. The humiliation of Muslims in airports is justified in the name of national security and their racialization is ignored. — Saher Selod, Forever Suspect_ Racialized…, 242
Categorization
- DEFINE: This passage concretely demonstrates the mechanism of racialization: a private actor (the airline) mirrors state security policy, converting religious identity into visible threat status.
- XREF: Directly feeds the reader’s replacement of the Global Racial Enemy slot — shows racialization operating through mundane non-state actors rather than only formal policing. Echoes Beydoun’s framing of Islamophobia as state-sanctioned.
- SEED: Angle: ‘the accommodating bystander’ — how third parties who quietly comply with discriminatory requests do the work of racialization without any policy change.
- ADDENDUM: Complements the ‘Complaints About Immodesty’ piece’s theme of norms being enforced by everyday compliance rather than official decree.
