African social movements demand monetary sovereignty and reject CFA symbols

Evidence

In parallel with the re-emergence of these technical criticisms, we are also witnessing an unprecedented mobilisation by African groups and organisations around more political issues. In Senegal, for example, an ‘anti-CFA franc front’ has been set up which organises conferences and events, highlighting the need for African countries of the franc zone to gain their ‘monetary sovereignty’. These social movements call for the elimination of the increasingly intolerable symbols of monetary colonialism. They reject the name ‘CFA franc’ and no longer want their banknotes to be produced in France. They also call for the elimination of the operations accounts and the end of the French presence in their central banks. — Fanny Pigeaud_ Ndongo Samba Sylla, Africa’s Last Colonial Currency, 324
