Advance site preparation dramatically shortens field acoustic measurement time
Evidence
A few special techniques were employed to allow the measurements to be completed rapidly at each location. First, a single primary sensor location was used at each site, where three geophones and three microphones were emplaced to record the pistol shots. Sites were selected and prepared before any of the measurements were begun. At each measurement location in advance of the acoustic measurements, a steel post was installed at the main sensor location to speed up the sensor installation, and the source positions were measured and marked with wooden posts indicating the correct location and height of the pistol. For most sites, source distances of 30 and 60 m were used, but some tree stands were too small to use the longer distance. Near the source locations, wooden stakes were placed for microphones 1 and 3 m from the source. — Donald G. Albert, Michelle E. Swearingen, Frank E. Perron, and David L.
