A balanced form of the Dogmatism Scale has never been developed
Evidence
On February 27, 1985, Rokeach wrote me to ask if I had developed a balanced version of the Dogmatism Scale. I had not. No one to my knowledge ever has, perhaps because Rokeach (1967) himself discouraged it. Haiman (1964) wrote five contrait versions of D Scale items for a balanced thirty-item test to measure open-mindedness. And Druckman (1967) developed a balanced forty-eight-item “Dogmatism Scale,” but only sixteen of the statements came from Rokeach’s test. Predictably, it had a very low split-half reliability. — Bob Altemeyer, The Authoritarian Specter, 4240

- QUESTION: Why would Rokeach actively discourage a balanced version of his own scale? That’s a notable methodological story worth chasing into Rokeach’s 1967 writings.
- XREF: Connects to the Dogmatism Scale’s psychometric history and to Rokeach’s related work on belief systems and the open and closed mind.
