EP20 Research Dossier — “Masking Internal Hierarchy”
4 sources — a nationalist leader who said the quiet part out loud, and the modern scholarship exposing what it hid.
1. The Idea Forge — X and Y
X: A nationalist leader explaining, in his own writing, exactly what his movement’s enemy is for. Y: “…and it’s interesting because modern scholarship shows the “unity” he claimed to be defending never actually existed in the first place.”
One-sentence point test: “The external enemy functions as cover for internal caste exploitation.” ✅
2. Voice & POV
Exposing, unsentimental. POV: “He wasn’t caught saying the quiet part. He said it as strategy, in his own theoretical writing.”
3. The Hook
“‘Nothing makes Self conscious of itself so much as a conflict with non-self,’ V.D. Savarkar wrote, laying out why Hindu nationalism needed a Muslim enemy. What he doesn’t say quite as loudly: the unity that enemy was supposedly protecting had a caste hierarchy running straight through it that the enemy conveniently made invisible.”
4. The Chain of Thought — full crescendo build
Movement I — Savarkar’s own words. “‘Nothing can weld people into a nation and nations into a state as the pressure of a common foe. Hatred separates as well as unites.’ A Hindu nation that wants to mask power lines internal to Hindu society needs an external threat to actualize unity… the real discursive purpose of the non-Hindu was to provide an alibi for Hindu caste exploitation.”
Movement II — the historical fiction the enemy was covering for. Contemporary scholarship on Hindutva presses on exactly this seam: “modern scholarship rejects the idea that any large population shares a single pure lineage.” There was never a genuinely unified Hindu people to defend — only a caste-stratified society whose real hierarchies long predate, and structurally contradict, the unity Savarkar’s rhetoric claims to protect.
5. The New Synthesis
Savarkar’s own theory, plus the modern historical correction of its founding premise: when a movement’s official story is “unity against a common enemy,” check first whether a genuine unity was ever actually being defended — the external enemy cannot create unity that didn’t exist, it can only manufacture the appearance of one, retroactively, over a population that was never actually unified to begin with.
6. The Resonating Ending
- E1: “Savarkar’s candor is the gift here. Most movements only ever imply this. He wrote it down as theory.”
- E2 (bridge): “But cohesion bought this way has a shelf life — the next episode prices out exactly how short.”
