Wilmington coup
The Wilmington coup (also known as the Wilmington massacre or insurrection of 1898) was a white supremacist overthrow of the democratically elected, biracial municipal government of Wilmington, North Carolina, and is considered the only successful coup d’état in American history. Claims refer to it as being the only successful coup in American history and note that it was driven by fabricated narratives about “Negro rule” rather than actual black insurrection.
