Social Identity Theory
A theory in social psychology, associated with Henri Tajfel and John Turner, positing that a portion of a person’s self-concept derives from their membership in social groups. It explains intergroup bias, prejudice, and discrimination as arising from identification with an ingroup and the motivation to maintain positive group distinctiveness. The claims use it in discussing how minimal ingroup identification can trigger bias and noting its relative neglect of emotion.
