Red Vienna

The period (1919–1934) when Vienna was governed by the Social Democratic Workers’ Party of Austria, noted for pioneering progressive social welfare policies, municipal housing, public health, and education programs that treated residents as rights-bearers regardless of class. This Austro-Marxist experiment in municipal socialism was ultimately destroyed by fascism in 1934.
