New South
A post-Civil War and post-Reconstruction era vision and economic program for the American South, promoted especially by figures like Henry Grady, that sought to modernize the region through industrial development, diversification away from the agrarian cotton economy, and reconciliation with the North. In contemporary usage it often refers to the South’s economic transformation toward service-sector, technology, and corporate-driven capitalism in contrast to its historical industrial and agricultural base.
