Lower Manhattan Expressway
A proposed expressway through Lower Manhattan in New York City, championed by public works official Robert Moses in the 1960s, which was ultimately defeated after sustained opposition organized by urban activist Jane Jacobs. The fight over the Lower Manhattan Expressway became a landmark episode in the history of community resistance to large-scale urban renewal and highway projects.
