Indian Territory
The land area in what is now Oklahoma and surrounding regions set aside by the United States government during the 19th century for the resettlement of Native American nations forcibly removed from their ancestral homelands in the eastern United States. It functioned as a distinct political and demographic region where relocated Native nations governed their own territories, including practices such as slavery, until its eventual dissolution and incorporation into the state of Oklahoma in 1907.
