Ideological State Apparatus

Althusser’s concept of the Ideological State Apparatus (ISA) refers to institutions (such as schools, church, media, family) through which the state secures ideological consent and reproduces the conditions of production, as opposed to repressive state apparatuses that operate primarily through force. The claims note that this concept is derived from Gramsci’s notion of consent apparatuses/civil society.
