Free Black

A legal and social category in antebellum America referring to African Americans who were not enslaved, including both those born free and those manumitted. Free Black people existed as a distinct class legally presumed to be fugitive slaves in many states and subjected to surveillance, restricted rights, and deportation pressures across both North and South.
