European Enlightenment
The European Enlightenment was an 18th-century intellectual and philosophical movement originating in Europe that emphasized reason, individualism, liberty, scientific inquiry, and skepticism of traditional authority. Its ideals—concerning human rights, progress, and rational governance—are frequently referenced as a body of thought that thinkers outside Europe engaged with, adapted, or critiqued in their own intellectual projects.
