Dervish movement
The Dervish refers to the Somali anticolonial movement and holy war led by Sayyid Mohammed Abdullah Hassan (“the Sayyid”) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which fought against British, Italian, and Ethiopian colonial rule in the Horn of Africa. It organized a military force that broke with traditional Somali clan structures to build unity, but ultimately failed to achieve its aims and left consequences such as underdevelopment and mistrust in British Somaliland.
