Chauri Chaura incident

A town in British India (in present-day Uttar Pradesh) where in February 1922 a clash between protesters and police escalated into an attack that killed several policemen. The incident is historically significant because Gandhi unilaterally called off his non-cooperation/satyagraha movement in response, an action that fractured the Hindu-Muslim Khilafat alliance and marked a key turning point in the Indian independence movement.
