British Raj

The period and system of British colonial rule over the Indian subcontinent (roughly 1858–1947). It refers both to the governance apparatus of the British Empire in India and to the policies and practices—such as exploiting caste/communal divisions and imposing migration controls—by which Britain maintained that rule.
