Black Saracen

A trope or archetype in medieval European literature and its modern reception, in which a “Black Saracen” figure serves as a racialized monstrous enemy—often a giant or messenger—embodying the medieval Christian West’s conception of Persians (and Saracens broadly) as threatening, demonized others. The term captures a continuity between medieval racialized depictions of non-Europeans and later Orientalist framings of Persians.
