Orwell, George โ Nineteen eighty-four [424]
It was not till twenty-three hours, when he was home and in bed โ in the darkness, where you were safe even from the telescreen so long as you kept silent โ that he was able to think continuously. โ Orwell, George, Nineteen eighty-four, 424
Note
This parenthesis does enormous work in half a line: darkness and silence become the only refuge from the internalized panopticon, and even there safety is conditional โ โso long as you kept silent.โ The clause bracingly restates the entire novelโs premise: thought itself is the crime, and the only privacy Oceania permits is the dark, the silent, the unspoken.
