Octavia E. Butler - Earthseed, Book 1 -… [967]
Then I looked around as though for something more to take, and surprised myself by almost crying at the sight of Cory’s big, well-tended back garden, trampled into the ground. Peppers, tomatoes, squashes, carrots, cucumbers, lettuce, melons, sunflowers, beans, corn… Much of it wasn’t ripe yet, but what hadn’t been stolen had been destroyed. — , Octavia E. Note
Every sentence before this one has been tactical — salvage, inventory, threat assessment. Here the character catches herself performing ‘as though for something more to take,’ and the mask drops. The catalogue of vegetables is the only place in the chapter where the sentence lengthens and stops taking; the ellipsis trails off rather than closes, and the joke inside the grief is that the harvest was taken before it was ripe.
