Octavia E. Butler - Earthseed, Book 1 -… [952]
There was a dead green face on our front porch. I went up the steps and stood looking at him—at her. The green face was a woman—tall, lean, bald, but female. And what had she died for? What was the point of all this? … “Leave her alone.” A woman who had a pair of Cory’s shoes in her hand strode up to me. “She died for all of us. Leave her alone.” — , Octavia E. Note
The pronoun correction ‘at him—at her’ is the passage’s whole hinge: Lauren’s default reading of the corpse as male and then the detail-by-detail revision (‘tall, lean, bald, but female’) shows perception rebuilding itself around a body. The stranger’s defense of the dead woman — delivered while holding Cory’s shoes, i.e. while looting Lauren’s own mother — is a turn that requires no gloss. ‘She died for all of us’ is left standing unrefuted.
