Octavia E. Butler - Earthseed, Book 1 -… [800]
We never found him. We found human bones and animal bones. We found the rotting corpses of five people scattered among the boulders. We found the cold remains of a fire with a human femur and two human skulls lying among the ashes. — , Octavia E. Butler - Earthseed, Book 1 -…, 800
Note
Anaphora turned into horror: ‘We found’ repeats four times, and after the negation it stops naming what was sought and starts inventorying what was instead. The escalation is positional — bones, then corpses, then the domestic detail of a cold fire, where the human remains aren’t dumped but arranged among the ashes, as though someone had been cooking or sitting there. No adjective does the work; the nouns do.
