Octavia E. Butler - Earthseed, Book 1 -… [634]

“Slept in a cardboard box for three days and stole food,” he said. “I don’t know why I kept going back to that box. Could have slept in any old corner. Some kids carry a piece of cardboard to sleep on—so they won’t be right down on the ground, you know. — , Octavia E. Butler - Earthseed, Book 1 -…, 634

Note

Keith answers the survival question with the one detail even he can’t account for — the compulsion to return to his box. The unselfconscious aside about other kids’ cardboard is a whole street society sketched in a subordinate clause, and the trailing ‘you know’ turns the narration outward, toward an auditor he can’t quite believe still exists. The logistics of starving and stealing matter less here than the small irrational anchor the boy kept choosing.
