Octavia E. Butler - Earthseed, Book 1 -… [446]

“We do live this way,” Dad said. There was no anger in his voice, no emotional response at all to her shouting. There was nothing. Weariness. Sadness. I’ve never heard him sound so tired, so…almost beaten. And yet he had won. His idea had beaten off a pair of armed thieves without our having to hurt anyone. If the thieves had hurt themselves, that was their problem. — , Octavia E. Butler - Earthseed, Book 1 -…, 446

Note

The narrator reports her father’s voice by subtraction — ‘no anger,’ ‘no emotional response at all,’ ‘There was nothing’ — and then rebuilds it from the fragments left over (Weariness. Sadness.). The clipped nominal sentences do the emotional work without naming an emotion, and the pivot on ‘And yet he had won’ frames the whole exchange as a paradox: victory that sounds like defeat. The final flat sentence (‘that was their problem’) is the father’s ethic smuggled into the daughter’s narration.
